Cummins, Rev. George Walton Jr., 86, died peacefully on December 3, 2015.
He was born September 4, 1929 in Louisville, to Bess and George Walton Cummins, Sr. His sister, Shirley Cummins McKenzie, preceded him in death. He was a graduate of DuPont Manual High School, the University of Louisville, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He married Jo Morgan Cummins on August 22, 1951, and they celebrated sixty-one years together prior to her passing in 2011. During the course of those years, George and Jo pastored churches in Kentucky, Georgia, and Missouri. They traveled extensively in the United States and abroad where George had the honor of preaching in the First Baptist Church of Cairo, Egypt and onboard the luxury liner SS United States. Upon retiring from the ministry, he and Jo were members of Calvary Baptist Church, Lexington, KY.
George is survived by his two daughters, Rebecca Cummins Collins (Michael) and Cynthia Carroll Cummins; two granddaughters, Kristin Collins Moomey (Marcus) and Courtney Collins Baird (Jason). He is also survived by the five children that bestowed the well-deserved title of "Great" Grandfather upon him, Morgan Elisabeth Moomey (Ella), Anna Pryor Baird, Benjamin Collin Baird (Collin), Margaret Frances Moomey (Frances), and his namesake, Cora Walton Baird, a beautiful ray of sunshine who entered his life just three weeks prior to his passing.
George will be fondly remembered for his devoted love of family and for the steadfast study, practice and proclamation of his faith. The things that brought him joy in this life are now firmly embedded in the lives of those who survive him - the pleasure of reading and writing in a quiet room filled with books, an early morning walk on an empty stretch of white, sandy beach, the sound of the local public radio station coming from the living room in the morning, the background noise of basketball on the television in the afternoon, the taste of ice cream on any occasion - grocery store vanilla after dinner, homemade peach on birthdays, ice cream parlor visits - his treat - whenever he could. His family finds comfort that these simple joys in his life were abundant and freely shared.
The family appreciates the caring love and support he received from the staffs of The Lafayette, Lexington, Kentucky and Windsor Gardens, Georgetown, Kentucky. You added immeasurably to his quality of life. In addition, the family thanks his physicians and the medical professionals of Georgetown Community Hospital ICU for their caring professionalism and support of him and his family through his final days.
