SCALF, WILLIAM R. SR., 89, of Louisville, passed away Friday, September 13, 2013 at Springhurst Pines. He was born December 22, 1923 in Corbin, KY, the son of Amos and Nellie Scalf. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Janette Scalf; and brothers, Vernon, Ned and Jim Scalf. William retired as a Command Sargent Major from the United States Army after 30 years of faithful service during World War II and the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal for his service in Vietnam, in addition to numerous other awards and medals. He was a life member of VFW Post 1410, Corbin, KY, American Legion Post 0200, Louisville, KY and also a life member of NCOA - Non Commissioned Officers Association. Survivors include a son, Bill Scalf, Jr. (Carol); a daughter, Diana Ward (Dan); six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Floyd and Ohler Scalf; and a sister, Betty Posten. Entombment will follow at Louisville Memorial Gardens East.
