Myrene Yerkey

August 31, 1925 — October 12, 2013

YERKEY, MYRENE, 88, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 12, 2013 in a care home in Fairfield, CA. In death she is joined with her husband of 54 years, Hobert Yerkey, also of Louisville. She is survived by sons Stephen, of Sacramento CA, and Jeffrey, of Concord CA. Myrene was born Rushie Myrene Stepp to Mable and Burns Madison "Matt" Stepp, of Inez, KY. She graduated from Inez High School and in 1948, from the University of Kentucky. Myrene was a reporter for the Welch, WVA 'Daily News' and met her husband-to-be, a federal employee of the Census Bureau, while interviewing him about his upcoming work supervising the 1950 Census. By early 1950 they had married and by the end of the year had actually increased the Census. Myrene raised her family in places throughout the midwest before she and her husband were able to return to her beloved Kentucky. Her husband was the head of the Jeffersonville, IN data collection center for the U.S. Census before his retirement in 1976. Myrene taught school in Northern Kentucky and later was an interior decorator in Michigan. In retirement, she and her husband enjoyed world travel. However her overarching love was Kentucky and she crisscrossed the Commonwealth endlessly, visiting family and friends. She departed God's Country in 2008 and this week returns. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens East. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday. Donations in Myrene Yerkey's name may be made to God's Pantry Food Bank
