Eva LaVerne Phillips

LaVerne Phillips, age 80 passed away on January 7, 2019 in her home.  She was born on January 14, 1938 in Tulare, CA and grew up in the agricultural environment of the San Joaquin Valley.  From her first job as an usherette at the Tulare Movie House, LaVerne maintained a lifelong fascination for old films and their stars.  She married her high school sweetheart, Greg Phillips on June 20th, 1953, and after a short stint living in San Francisco they began moving throughout the country as he pursued his Air Force career.  Along the way they had two daughters, which she doted over while being the consummate military officer’s wife.  LaVerne worked as a checker at Lucky Market in Napa, CA and in 1970 bought a new home for her and her daughters in their hometown of Fairfield, CA.  In 1974 she moved to Escondido, CA where she worked as a bookkeeper in the Real Estate business for 32 years.  In 2006 she retired and relocated to Louisville, KY to be near her daughters.  She came to love Louisville as her home.

She is preceded in death by her husband Lt. Col. Gregory Wayne Phillips, Ret., her parents, Leonard and Eva (Kent) Brownlee, and her siblings DeLores LaPointe, DeWayne Brownlee, and LaVone Gray.

She is survived by her daughters Sherri Lynn Wasserzug (Alex) and Donna Kathleen Werner, her grandchildren Nicholas Wasserzug (Angela), Jennifer Rice, Sonya Werner (Billy Bryant), Dominic Wasserzug (Tonya Whitehouse) and Julian Wasserzug, and her great grandchildren Vincent Rice, Maximilian Wasserzug, Madelyn Rice, Karly Wasserzug and Summer Wasserzug.

A service celebrating LaVerne’s life will be held 1:00 pm Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Louisville Memorial Gardens Funeral Home East, 11601 Ballardsville Rd. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 on Wednesday at the funeral home.
